My Lord! How possible that You chastise me after my faith in Thee:

  • or keep me distant, despite my love for Thee,
  • or deprive me, while I hope for Thy mercy and forgiveness,
  • or forsake me, while I seek sanctuary in Thy pardon?

Nay! How could that Thy generous countenance let me down?! Nay!

  • Would that I knew ─Did my mother bear me for wretchedness? Or did she nurture me for suffering?
  • Would then that she borne me not, nor nurtured me!
  • Or Would that I had knowledge ─Have You appointed me as one of felicity?
  • and have You singled me out for Thy nearness and proximity?
  • Then would my eyes be gladdened, and in that my soul reach serenity.

My Lord! Would You disgrace faces which fall prostrating before Thy mightiness?

  • Or would You silence tongues which speak in praise of Thy glory and grandeur?
  • Or would You deprive hearts which insist on loving Thee?
  • Or would You deafen ears which take pleasure in hearing Thy remembrance in Thy will?
  • Or would You disable hands which expectations have raised to Thee in hope of Thy clemency?
  • Or would You punish bodies which worked to obey Thee until they grew thin in struggling for Thee?
  • Or would You chastise legs which ran to worship Thee?

Of course not, of course not.

  • My Lord! Lock not toward those who profess Thy Unity the doors of Thy Mercy,
  • and Veil not those who yearn for Thee, from seeing the Vision of Thy Beauty!
  • My Lord! a soul which You have enhanced by its professing Thy Oneness ─how would You degrade it by shunning it?
  • And a conscience devoted on loving Thee, how would You burn it in the heat of Thy fires?

My Lord! Give me sanctuary from Thy painful wrath and Thy mighty displeasure!

  • O All-loving, O All-kind!
  • O Compassionate, O Merciful!
  • O Compeller, O Subduer!
  • O All-forgiver, O All-Concealer!
  • Deliver me, through Thy mercy, from the inferno of the Fire and the disgrace of shame
  • when the good are set apart from the evil,
  • and forms are transformed,
  • and events terrify,
  • the good-doers are advanced to You nearby,
  • and the mischief-doers are taken away, very far,

and every soul is paid in full what it has earned, and they shall not be wronged.
