INTRODUCTION:

The Sura Yusuf (Chapter12 of the Holy Qur’an) gives the narrative of the beauty of the physical body, the ideal character, and the chaste conduct of high morals – godly patience and fortitude- the ultimate triumph of truth – the self condemnation of falsehood – the frustration of man’s plotting against virtues and the irresponsible carry out of God’s plan. A concise description of the divine gift of the prophetic interpretation of dreams. The story narrated in this Sura is the most detailed one of all the references in the Holy Qur’an about the historic events of the ancient prophets. It has a common appeal to men and women with reference to many important vicissitudes of human life on earth. The story of Prophet Yusuf deals with the external manly beauty in a man with the ideal excellence and purity of his soul, and a woman (Zulaikha), madly falling in love with the manly beauty (of Prophet Yusuf) to own it for herself for the satisfaction of her carnal desire. Scholars have called the story as the best or the most beautiful narration.

 QUR’ANIC VERSION:

Comparing the Qur’anic version of the story of Joseph with the Bible version of it, it is quite clear the Qur’an has given the spiritual, moral and the social an economical significance of great importance to it, whereas the Bible gives only a narration as to how the Children if Israel migrated to Egypt.

Prophet Yacoob (Jacob), son of Prophet Ishaq (Issac), and grand son of Prophet Abraham, had first married with Lia- and from her were born six sons. Afterwards Prophet Yacoob married Rahel the younger sister of Lia who gave birth to a daughter Diana, and two sons named 1. Bin-Yameen (Benjamin) and 2. Yusuf (Joseph). Besides these two wives, Yacoob had two harems, Zulfa from whom he had two sons 1. Had, and 2. Ashar, and the other harem was Maleha, she gave birth to a daughter Dunya, and two sons 1.Don, and 2. Taftali. Altogether Yacoob had twelve sons and Yusuf was the youngest and extremely beautiful. Yacoob loved Yusuf the most. Yusuf’s mother Rahel had died and his aunt who later wedded to Yacoob, had brought up Yusuf. The eleven brothers of Yusuf were envious of him.

PROPHET YUSUF’S (p) EARLY LIFE:

Yusuf when he was yet of twelve years of age dreamt that gates that gates of heaven had become wide open, a great light had enveloped the whole environment, an ocean with huge waves rising in it and fishes of various kinds singing the glory of God, Yusuf standing upon the peak of a mountain surrounded with green trees, with streams of fresh water flowing at the foot of it, the keys of the treasuries of the earth being in Yusuf’s hands, the Sun, the Moon, and Eleven Stars descending down from heaven prostrating themselves before Yusuf. When Yacoob heard the details of the dream, he advised Yusuf not to leak it out to any of his brothers. It is said that the wife of one of Yusuf’s brothers was nearby and overhearing Yusuf’s relating the dream, conveyed the information to her husband, so the news spread. Yacoob’s warning to Yusuf not to leak out the dream, makes it evident that Yacoob knew his other sons would get envious of Yusuf and what they would do to get rid of him. The envy of brothers had gradually developed into definite hostility towards Yusuf, and they only waited for an opportunity even to do away with Yusuf’s life. One day when the brothers of Yusuf found their father unwilling to permit them to take Yusuf along with them in a journey to other tqwn, they went to Yusuf and somehow made him to go to the father and get the permission for himself.

YUSUF SUFFERS TREATMENT OF HIS BROTHERS:

At last the father agreed, and desired Yusuf be given a bath and be clad in the best of his clothes. The shirt which Prophet Abraham wore when he was thrown Nimrod into the fire, was tied on his side (as a talisman), and advised the other sons repeatedly to take special care of Yusuf’s convenience, safety and security. There was a tree outside the town called “Shajartul Wida” (i.e., the Parting Tree). It was a custom that whenever anyone used to go on any journey, his relatives or friends used to accompany him up to the tree and then bid him goodbye. Yusuf and all his brothers assembled under the tree waiting for Yacoob to come and wish the goodbye.

Yusuf’s sister Dunya who was asleep dreamt that a wolf had snatched away Yusuf from the lap of her father Yacoob. She awoke crying and went to the tree and begged Yusuf to take her along with him during the journey, which request could not be granted. At last, Yacoob before wishing goodbye, embraced Yusuf and wept very much and in the end said to Yusuf ; “My dear remember God always; Never forget Him; Know thou that there is no other helper  save He; Forget me no; I shall also not forget thee.” Yacoob was shedding tears and Dunya was crying for Yusuf when the party started moving into the desert. As long as they were in sight of Yacoob, the brothers of Yusuf pretended to avoid least inconvenience to Yusuf and no sooner they went out of his sight, than they began torturing him with all sorts of heart less cruelties. They made him to run into the sahara before them and when Yusuf pleaded for kindness they told him to call to the Sun, the Moon, the Stars which he dreamt to be prostrating before him, to help him. When one brother kicked him, Yusuf went running to another brother seeking protection but he also behaved in a similar cruel way of slapping on his face. He was made to run and when in the wild running his shoes gave way, he was made to run on the hot thorny desert, bare-footed. When he felt a killing thirst and asked for some water, one of the brothers threw water on the sand and did not give him even a drop of it

YUSUF THROWN INTO A DESERTED WELL BY BROTHERS:

At last, when the brothers of Yusuf decided to throw him into a deserted well, he prayed his brothers to allow him a little respite to offer his last prayer to God. When Yusuf finished his prayers, his brothers tied him to a rope, to send him down into the well. Yusuf told his brothers:“ Look ye my brothers; I give you my last words. Be ye kind to my old father.” The brothers began to strip him of his shirt to get it drenched in the blood of a sheep and to tell their father that a wolf devoured Yusuf.  Yusuf, implored and prayed (to his brothers) not to render him naked and yet they strip him of his shirt. They tied him with a rope and hung him in the well to send him down into it. Yusuf again said: “Hear ye my dear brothers; I give you my last words; Be ye kind to my father and let him not know what hath befallen me, lest he might feel and curse you all”. Hearing what Yusuf said, one brother cut the rope with which Yusuf was hung into the well. Yusuf fell down into the well wounded and unconscious.

Having thrown Yusuf in the well, the brothers drenched Yusuf’s shirt in the blood of a sheep and decided to go and report to their father that a wolf had devoured Yusuf. One brother asked:”Are we not the children of Yacoob, the son of Ishaq (Isaac), the son of Abraham who were both the apostles of God? Do ye think God will not inform our father of the truth?”  The brothers did not know what should be done. Finally, they decided to stand together and offer joint prayer in a congregation (i.e.,Namaz-e- Jama’at). But according to the tradition of family of Prophet Abraham (p) and Prophet Ishaq (p), a congregation prayer could be offered with not less than eleven persons including an Imam. But they were all only ten ( Yusuf was in the well and Benjamin had stayed home ). One brother suggested, make God as the Imam and stand all the eleven in a row, and offer the prayer and seek God’s help in keeping the truth in secret. They all agreed and prayed for the truth not to be revealed to their father.

PROPHET YACOOB (p) AND DUNYA RESTLESS AND WORRIED:

After the party left, Yacoob and Dunya were restless and worried about Yusuf. Every now and then Yacoob used to ask Duniya to go to the tree and see into the desert if party of his sons was returning. Both father and daughter stationed themselves on a mound with their eyes fixed towards the desert anxiously waiting to see the party. Atlast the party of the brothers of Yusuf was sighted and Yacoob anxiously told Duniya to see if Yusuf was there among them. Duniya cried and said she did not see Yusuf among the brothers. Yacoob gave out a loud sigh of sorrow and grief. The sons returned to their father and related the fabricated story of Yusuf beinb devoured by a wolf. They showed the father Yusuf’s shirt with blood all over. Seeing which, Yacoob swooned and Duniya began weeping. Since the shirt was untorn to which Yacoob said taunting that“ the wolf was so friendly that it did not hurt even the shirt and swallowed Yusuf as a whole”.

PROPHET YACOOB HAD DIVINE KNOWLEDGE:

Yacoob knew the whole truth and wept only for the separation from his beloved son. Yacoob told his sons that what they reported was the truth, to bring the wolf to him who ate away Yusuf and he would ask him if he had actually eaten him away. The sons went into the desert, caught hold of a wolf and brought the beast to Yacoob saying that was the wolf who ate away Yusuf. On being asked by Prophet Yacoob, the beast spoke aloud in clear lnguage, saying”O Apostle of God; God is my witness that I did not eat Yusuf, the blood and flesh of the apostles of God is forbidden for us. I am new to this place, on my visit to my relatives in this Sahara, your sons have unnecessarily caught me and have brought me to thee”.Yacoob released the beast and let him return to the Sahara.

YUSUF RECEIVES DIVINE HELP:

The Sixth Holy Imam Jafar As-Sadiq (a.s.) said, While Yusuf was still in the well Angel Gabriel told him pray to God for help.” Soon after a merchants carvan  lost its way and arrived at the deserted well in which Yusuf was lying. One of the travelers put his bucket into the well to fetch water.  Yusuf held the rope or got into the bucket and got out of the well along with the bucket. The people wondered and kept him in their camp. The brothers of Yusuf used to come to the well every day to know what had happened to Yusuf. When they found Yusuf is safe with the travelers, they claimed Yusuf to be their slave and had run away from them. At last, the travelers purchased Yusuf as a slave. The brothers of Yusuf told the merchants that Yusuf their slave was a habitual runaway, hence they should keep him always bound in chain. While passing through the desert the carvan passed the cemetry in which was buried Yusuf’s mother. Yusuf fell upon his mother’s grave and wept remembering her. Not finding Yusuf in the carvan, the traveller went in search of him and finding Yusuf at the grave rendered a violent slap on his face and Yusuf’s face began bleeding at which aviolent thunder shook the skies and a heavy lightening began to dazzle the eyes, lighting the whole desert as if it aimed to strike the carvan only. The merchants got perturbed and on enquiry came to know about the atrocity done by the traveller against Yusuf. The merchants immediately relieved Yusuf of the chains and provided him with a selected steed to ride along with them.

MERCHANTS CARVAN BRINGS YUSUF TO EGYPT:

When the carvan entered Egypt the crowd was stunned at the enchanting beauty of Yusuf. Very soon the news about wonder-striking beauty of Yusuf spread in the town like wild-fire and the wealthy ones of the city flocked to the slave-market to purchase Yusuf. At last the Vazier purchased him for his wife Zulaikha, and Yusuf was assigned a respectable place of service in the palace. Zulaikha like Yusuf very much. Day by day the fire of love for Yusuf in the heart of Zulaikha got inflamed, and every time she endeavored to mislead him towards gaining her object of illegal union with him. Yusuf strengthened himself seeking protection from God.

ZULAIKHA DESPERATELY ATTRACTED TOWARDS YUSUF:

Every day, Zulaikha, cast her eyes upon him and said, “lie with me”. But he refused saying my master is not in the house. There is none greater than me in the house except thee, and thou art his wife; how could I do this wickedness and a sin? And it came to pass again and again every time Zulaikha asked him to lie by her or to be with her. One day when there was no one in the house, she caught him by his garment saying, “Lie with me” and Yusuf let his torn garment jn her hand and fled, and got outside the house. When master came…….

Part  2

Zulaikha asked him to lie by her or to be with her. One day when there was no one in the house, she caught him by his garment saying, “Lie with me” and Yusuf let his torn garment in her hand and fled, and got outside the house. When master came, Zulaikha blamed Yusuf of assaulting her.

Yusuf Pleaded Not Guilty:

It was Zulaikha who made violent overtures and tried the worst to entangle Yusuf into a sinful act, but Yusuf who was wholly a pure, innocent and infallible, abstained himself. A witness bearing the witness refers to a miraculous event that when Yusuf pleaded that he was not guilty the Aziz asked “What is the proof?” Yusuf was inspired by God to point out to a baby 3 to 6 months old who was in the room. Aziz asked, “Hoe could the baby speak?”. Yusuf replied, “My God is omnipotent, thou only ask Him.” When asked by Aziz the baby in clear language declared aloud, “ O Aziz, if Yusuf’s shirt be torn from front, she(Zulaikha) speaks the truth and Yusuf is a liar, and if it is torn from the hind, Yusuf is true and she is a liar”. It had happened that when Zulaikha chased Yusuf he ran towards the door and she came running and held him holding his shirt from behind and the shirt was torn in the hind.
Zulaikha Invites Dignified Women To Meet Yusuf:

The imputation against Zulaikha’s conduct had spread almost in every house in the town. Zulaikha at last chose some of the dignified women and invited them to a feast with a fruit which needed to be cut with a knife. Zulaikha ordered Yusuf to enter the chamber and wish the ladies. When Yusuf did as commanded by his mistress, all the women were so stunned (of his beauty) and got so enchanted that instead of cutting the fruits they cut their own hands and did not know or even feel what they were doing. “Hasha lillah” is an exclamation of wonderful admiration seeking protection of God against getting beguiled to any wrong belief about any experience. It is reported that there were forty women of whom nine fell unconscious as they saw Yusuf.

Yusuf Imprisoned By The King:

When the women got hopeless of winning over Yusuf, they suggested Zulaikha to imprison Yusuf for a few days and subject him to the miseries therein so that he might then realize the value of the luxuries in the palace. Zulaikha readily accepted the suggestion, for that would make public know that it was Yusuf who was guilty and not she. Yusuf was enchained and taken through the streets of the town with an announcer announcing “Look ye!. This is the punishment for the attempt against the chastity against the wife of the “Aziz”, Zulaikha.  To know how Yusuf felt and whose help he sought, Zulaikha was in the guise of an ordinary spectator among the huge crowd witnessing the scene and heard every one in the street praising the beauty and the innocence of Yusuf and condemning her as an unchaste and crafty woman. Gabriel inspired Yusuf to cry out saying “ Getting imprisoned is far better than falling into displeasure of God and getting punished by the hell-fire”.  Zulaikha heard this cry and felt self condemned.  At last Yusuf was put into the prison.

Yusuf used to always weep in the prison remembering his old father. Two other persons (Saqi and Mahila) working in the palace were also imprisoned on the charge of attempting to poison the King (Aziz). Yusuf used to move very sympathetically among the prisoners, treating them very kindly and had been helping them by mending their worn-out clothes, and in other possible ways. Yusuf had a divine gift of interpreting dreams. The prisoners used to relate their dreams to Yusuf and seek the interpretations and so did (Saqi and Mahila) the two companions of Joseph.  Saqi had dreamt that he was drawing wine by squeezing the grapes, and Mahila had dreamt he was holding some bread in a bowl on his head and the birds were eating the bread away. Yusuf wanted to be quick in interpreting the dreams for there was death for one of them. He first preached Islam, the correct faith in God, and then interpreted the dreams.

 Companion Mahila Executed:

According to the interpretations, the two companions were summoned out of the prison and Mahila the cook, the charge against whom was proved, was executed, and the Saqi who was proved innocent and also faithful was released free and promoted into the service of the King. Before the prisoners were released Yusuf had desired them to remind King of his innocence. Yusuf was made to remain in the prison for a few more years. When Yusuf was informed of seeking help from King instead of seeking from God, he wept and prayed to God in tears. At last the prayers of Yusuf and his father Yaccob were heard, the period of imprisonment of Yusuf was brought to an end by a dream which the King was caused to have.

Yusuf Invited BY King To Interpret Dream:

When the great scholars who were experts in interpreting dreams got helpless against the confused nature of the dreams, the one of the fellow prisoners, Saqi requested permission to go to the prison and get the correct interpretation of the dream from Yusuf who had proved himself to be an expert interpreter of dreams. The King immediately consented. Saqi went into the prison and asked interpretation of the dream from Yusuf. Yusuf advises the ruling authority to hoard the surplus of the foodstuff for the unseen emergencies in the interest of the people and how to preserve it so it may not get rotten and useless. It is a lesson to the authorities to be always on guard against a possible famine which might overtake a country.

Zulaikha Makes Confession Yusuf Innocent:

When Saqi conveyed the interpretation to the King, the King got extremely pleased and wanted to hear the interpretation directly from the prisoner (Yusuf) and ordered to present the prisoner to him in person. When Zulaikha heard about Yusuf coming to the King, she made confession acknowledging the fault to be her own and declaring Yusuf as innocent.
Yusuf Achieves Most Honored Position:

Thus Yusuf became the dearest, the most honored and closest in position to the king, and was placed in-charge of the treasuries of the country.

Yusuf ordered that all people should start and carry on cultivation of food grains as much as they could. A huge grain store was built outside the town and all surplus food stuff were stored and secured. When the seven years of prosperity ended, the famine started by creating a violent appetite that people began to feel. When the whole land of Canaan got into grip of the famine, people flocked to the king to arrange for supply of grain. Yusuf arranged the sale of grains out of the storage in exchange of whatever assets (like cash, jewelry, animals, slaves, lands and wells etc.) they possessed. The ultimate result was that that nothing remained in Canan that did not become property of Joseph. Thus the whole land of Canaan was rendered enslaved to Yusuf which enabled
Prophet Yaccob (p) Permits Sons To Go To Egypt For Food Grain:

Yusuf to hold people in his grip to drive the people towards worship of One True God and live a godly life.

The region where Yusuf’s father Yaccob and his brothers lived was also affected by the famine. At last the sons of Yaccob approached him and said, “ Father, that the king of Egypt is reported to be very kind and a very charitable man, helping the famine-stricken people and hence we seek thy permission to go to Egypt and try there our luck and get some grain if possible”. Prophet Yaccob (p) permitted but kept Bin-Yameen, the brother of Yusuf with him. The party of the ten brothers entered Egypt and Yusuf recognized them, but they did not recognize Yusuf. Yusuf told them that supply of grains shall be according to the number of men that came, bring next time along with  them any one left behind.

Yusuf ordered the slaves to place the things which Yusuf’s brothers had paid as price of the wheat in their own bags without their knowledge, so that when after reaching their destination so that they would see that price of the grain had somehow been returned to them along with the supply and they would surely return.  Accordingly, the sons asked for permission to go and return the price. Yaccob permitted Bin-Yameen to also go to Egypt along with his brothers. Yaccob had given an advice to enter by different gates of the city because the other sons were also fair looking and if all of them entered through one and the same gate of the city, they might be affected by some evil eye. In spite of the caution taken, Bin-Yameen got separated and lost his way. Divine help at last guided him and he joined to his other brothers. They all entered the court of Yusuf and said they had brought with them their brother Bin-Yameen and they also wanted to return the price of the wheat which by some mistake had been left in the grains supplied to them.

Bin-Yameen Taken As A Slave:

Yusuf ordered for six trays of food for the brothers and desired that on each tray should sit the children of one and the same parents. On the five trays sat all the brothers, on the sixth tray Bin-Yameen was left alone standing with tears in his eyes. Yusuf asked the reasons for shedding tears. Bin-Yameen said that all others were one and the same parents and that he had been singled since losing his own brother Yusuf. Yusuf consoling Bin-Yameen said, “Grieve thou not, Come thou unto me, I shall be thy brother and join you in taking food from the tray.” Saying this Yusuf took Bin-Yameen into his own chamber and there he disclosed to him to who he actually was and informed him of the device by which he intended to detain him and let the other brothers go. Bin-Yameen told Yusuf that their father not trusting his brothers had sent him along with them, with a definite oath and if he did not return home, it might be unbearable for the old grief-stricken father. The valuable cup with which the supply of grain was measured was intentionally left in the bag of Bin-Yameen.  After a search Bin-Yameen was found guilty of stealing the cup and was detained to be a slave of the owner of the stolen property for one complete year.

Prophet Yaccob (p) Becomes Blind:

The brothers returned home without Bin-Yameen and told their father the entire story about Bin-Yameen taken as a slave for stealing a cup. Prophet Yacoob learning of losing another son began crying and weeping for several days which ultimately made him blind. He told them “O Children, Go back to Egypt and search for Yusuf and his brother Bin-Yameen.  All brothers went back to Egypt and after entering through the gates went to the Palace. Yusuf knew that brothers will come back soon. He asked them “do you remember what did you do to your brother during your journey when you were totally ignorant? The brothers were shocked and replied, “who are you and why are you asking this question?“  Yusuf replied, “ I am your brother Yusuf and this is my brother Bin-Yameen. They all put their heads down and said “verily Allah had preferred you above us.” Yusuf replied, I am not going to bring it up any more. Forget it. Consider it forgotten from today. He asked them to return to the Father along with Bin-Yameen. He gave them a shirt and asked them to take it to the father and touch it to his eyes and his sight will come back again. When they all reached home, their father said “I could smell, the smell of Yusuf. The brothers gave the garment (the shirt) and touched to his eyes, and his eye sight got restored. He said Didn’t I tell you, I knew from Allah that both my sons were alive and safe. The brothers asked, So you knew the person we were dealing with in Egypt turned out to be Yusuf:. The all surrendered and asked, ‘ oh Dad ask Allah to forgive us. The wolf did not eat Yusuf, we had thrown him into a well. We were wrong doers.  The father said, I am going to ask Allah to forgive you,  Allah is most Merciful.

Prophet Yaccob (p) Visits Egypt To Meet Yusuf:

They all went to Egypt to meet Yusuf. Yusuf was also anxiously waiting for them. When Yusuf saw his Father, he grabbed him, hugged him. All his brothers prostrated including his father. That was a prostration of respect. Yusuf told his father remember once I had told you I had a dream of eleven planets, sun and moon prostrating to me”. The eleven planets are the eleven sons, the sun and moon were father and perhaps sister Dunya. Yusuf took all of them to the palace, and put his father next to him on the throne.

Serat e Mustaqim- A Straight Path

SERAT E MUSTAQIM – THE STRAIGHT PATHsample-2.png

SERAT E MUSTAQIM – THE STRAIGHT PATH (Update #2)

The Serat e Mustaqim, is A True Path, A Right Path or A Straight Path. It is the path mentioned in Holy Qur’an, Surat al-Fātiha, and in numerous other verses under different Surah. It is a plea to the Almighty made by the faithful: “Guide us (O Lord!) to the Straight Path” (Holy Qur’ān, 1:6), thus praying Allāh Almighty to keep their feet firm as they pass on it so it may lead them to happiness in this life and salvation in the life hereafter.  Imām Ja’fer al-Sādiq (a.s.), as recorded on p. 41, Vol. 1, of Tabatabai’s Al-Mizān fi Tafsir al-Qur’ān  was asked once about the meaning of this verse (1:6); so he said, “It means: Guide us to upholding the path that leads to Your pleasure, that ends at Your Paradise, that prohibits us from following our own desires and thus deviate, or follow our own views and thus perish.”
As-Serāt al-Mustaqeem is  referred to in numerous verses like, verse 61 of Surat Ya-Sin (Ch. 36), in verse 52 of Surat al-Shura (Ch. 42), in verse 16 of Surat al-Mā’ida (Ch. 5), in verses 126 and 161 of Surat al-An’am (Ch. 6), in verses 70 and 174 of Surat al-Nisaa (Ch. 4), in verse 42 of Surat al-Hijr (Ch. 15).
The straight path separates Paradise from hell. With reference to those who did not follow the right path, the Almighty says the following: “Whoever follows My guidance will not lose his way nor fall into perdition” (Holy Qur’ān, 20:123).
Allama Iqbal in one of his poetry said: “KHUDI KO KER BULAND ITNA,  KE KHUDA  BANDE  SE KHUD PUCHHE BATA TERI RAZA  KIYA HAI” -Raise your worship so high that the Almighty is moved to ask you “tell Me what do you want?”
